Furnishing of the 3,604 flats in the Olympic and Paralympic Village is now underway, and the furnished flats will be delivered to the Organising Committee of the Rio 2016 Games by the end of March. Brazil's Minister of Sport George Hilton and Miriam Belchior – President of the Brazilian Federal Savings Bank (Caixa Economica Federal) – visited the facilities on Monday (14.03). The bank is funding R$ 2.33 billion of the project, which is being implemented by private companies.

"The flat I visited was already decorated. I was here a year ago and it's good to see this through. We are delivering what we promised when we submitted a bid to host the Games. Just like in the World Cup, Brazil will do great in the Olympics," said Belchior.

The 31 buildings are divided into seven condos, and are now being marketed by the companies that built the complex, which also includes 120 retail units. Total sales by the consortium running the project should come to R$ 3.6 billion.

"We can see that the Olympic Park has been completely reshaped with new colours. The athletes will enjoy modern facilities, which goes to show that the Federal Government is in tune with the state and the municipal governments," said Minister George Hilton.

The Olympic and Paralympic Village is now undergoing the finishing stage, and temporary structures are being put up. "The fully finished village will be delivered to the Organising Committee by the end of this month. The temporary structures are now being built. Under the responsibility of the Committee, the works for the Olympic and Paralympic restaurant are running very smoothly," said Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes, who met with the delegation at the Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca.

The Olympic Village can house 17,950 athletes and coaches, and was built on a total area of 200,000m² in Barra da Tijuca. The site will also include a green park covering 72,000m², bike paths along 4.5km and a pond covering 5,500m².

Inside the complex one will find the Carioca Street, which will take the athletes and delegation members to places such as the main restaurant, and will feature traditional Rio de Janeiro kiosks. Along this path one will also find an alternative restaurant, a recreation area, a fitness centre, medical facilities, and a religious centre. In addition, the athletes will have access to banks, a post office, hairdressers, cafes, flower shops, and Internet cafes.

Accessibility

During the Paralympic Games, the Village will have 21 buildings and five condos. The athletes will have 800 accessible flats and more than eight thousand beds. The longest distance to the main restaurant in the Village will be 800m.

In terms of mobility, the athletes will take 50 minutes maximum to get to the training and competition areas. For 43% of athletes, the trip will only last 10 minutes, while for the other 57%, they will be 25 minutes away from the competition and training venues.

Works in review

In the Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca, the officials assessed the progress of works for the Rio 2016 Games. According to Mayor Eduardo Paes, some fine adjustments are all that is needed for the main area where the Olympic and Paralympic tournaments will be held.

"The park is basically finished. The temporary structures are now being put up. We are behind the schedule with the Velodrome, but we still have the time to catch up before the test event to be held by the end of April. The works are progressing well. Our relationship with Caixa is as good as it gets. Caixa has been fast tracking the provision of federal funds and things are progressing well," he said.

In addition to the Velodrome, the Equestrian Centre was also a source of concern, but projects are well underway according to Minister George Hilton. "I visited the Deodoro Complex myself and the works have progressed significantly. Both in the Equestrian Park and here, in the Velodrome – which were slightly behind schedule –, we are urging the companies responsible for the projects to speed up works. They have committed to deliver all projects on time".

Judging from the progress of the works for the Olympic Games, the President of Caixa stressed that Brazil has shown its capacity to organise mega events to the world. "Most importantly, Brazil was able to host other major events in the past and is showing this here today. In the case of Caixa, we are responsible for funding various projects, for monitoring federally funded projects, and also all the work involving the athletes".

In addition to investments in sports facilities that make up the National Training Network, the Olympic Parks alone are receiving R$ 1.66 billion in funds from the Growth Acceleration Programme (PAC). Caixa provides support to sports such as wrestling, athletics, gymnastics, cycling, and football.
