Sports Minister speaks of sports and legacy at opening ceremony of the Rio Media Center

Leonardo Picciani bets Brazil will have its best performance in history, and highlights national impact on sports infrastructure after Rio 2016 Games

The Rio Media Center, inaugurated this Wednesday (27 July), is a space created to help Brazilian and foreign press professionals to understand and follow the transformations Rio de Janeiro has undergone with the arrival of the Rio 2016 Games. The opening event was attended by Brazilian Minister of Sport Leonardo Picciani, Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes, State Government Chief of Staff Leonardo Espíndola, Olympic Public Authority (APO) President Marcelo Pedroso and Rio 2016 Organising Committee Chief of Staff Leslie Kikoler.

Check out the key points addressed by the Minister of Sport during the event:

History of the Rio 2016 Games
Over the next 50+ days, journalists will have the task, the possibility and the opportunity to tell the story of the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the first held in Rio de Janeiro and also the first held in a South American country. These professionals will be able to share with the world (and the rest of Brazil) the stories and transformations that took place in the lead-up to the Games, so that all can follow and feel they are a part of this extraordinary event Brazil is incredibly proud to host. These are the Brazil Games; Games that will be marked by success and by Brazil's, Rio's and South America's ability to host a major event and to warmly welcome every delegation, tourist and journalist. We will certainly be very successful in the Olympics.

Sporting moment
Brazilians are passionate about sport. The Games will be an opportunity for our people to get to know some sports that are not traditional here. It will inspire our people to take part in more activities . Brazil undoubtedly has what it takes to have their best participation in the history of the Games. Many people only speak of medals, but we have practically doubled the size of our delegation since London. In general, I believe that the Olympics will be a great opportunity to develop sports culture in the country.

Legacy
The Olympic legacy goes beyond the city of Rio de Janeiro. We have built and equipped sport training centres that will be used all over the country. We are also improving our National Sports Training Network. The intention is to unify the operation of all these facilities in all regions of Brazil so that young people can use them as they develop their sporting lives. This legacy will be integrated throughout the country, and follow a single approach.
