President Temer says Brazil is prepared to host the Rio 2016 Games

In a video message, President says the Olympics are "a historic gathering event" and a time of mingling with "all peoples of the world"

Brazil's acting president Michel Temer made a speech on Friday (8/7) to reassure tourists and athletes coming to Rio de Janeiro for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. In video posted on Portal Planalto, Temer said the government will ensure everyone's security and health during the Olympics, which is due to start on 5 August.

About policing in airports, arenas and Olympic routes, Temer said that the Federal Government, together with the state and municipal governments, has been holding frequent meetings to ensure the security of all everyone visiting Brazil.

The president also said that the risk of infection with tropical diseases is low, including the Zika virus, which is carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. "We've fought this mosquito in Brazil in the past, and I should point out that we are now in winter, where any disease-carrying mosquito becomes less active," he explains.
"We do want to mingle with with all peoples of the world in this historic gathering afforded by the Olympics," the acting president said.
