Hotel sector is already recording 90% occupation rate for the Rio 2016 Games

At Games time, Rio de Janeiro could play host to between 350 and 500 thousand international tourists

The hotel sector's occupation rate in the city is already reaching 90% of rooms booked for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games period. Data was published by the Brazilian Association of the Hotel Industry of the state of Rio de Janeiro (ABIH-RJ).

"Since being announced as the host of the Olympics and Paralympics, Brazil has been investing in infrastructure to provide better services to domestic and international visitors. The Games in Rio de Janeiro led the hotel sector in the city to undergo a renovation process. Expectations have been more than met and we hope that the occupation rate remains high, as the country will become the global centre of attention", mentioned marketing and public relations director of the Brazilian Tourism Board (Embratur) Sérgio Flores.

According to the survey, 98% of rooms have been booked in 5 star hotels. In 3 stars, the average number of rooms booked reaches 87.94%. Ipanema and Leblon are the most sought after areas, corresponding to 98.33% of bookings, more that the Olympic neighbourhood itself – Barra da Tijuca, which stands at 96.69% currently.

In April 2016, the Rio Convention & Visitors Bureau in partnership with FowardKeys published a survey that also pointed out hotels' occupancy rate. The study states that bookings should be 208% higher than in the World Cup period. The survey also shows that 63% of foreign visitors with arrival date before the Olympics, will stay in Rio 14 days on average.

At Games time, Rio de Janeiro could play host to between 350 and 500 thousand international tourists. "The good result of the FIFA 2014 World Cup, with many pleased tourists, with no incidents, left a positive image for the world. Brazil has reinforced the idea that it is a great host of big events", stated the Embratur director.
